Yeoju ceramics - celadon porcelain, white clay
porcelain, buncheong have a thousand year old history.
The Yeoju ceramic village consists of over 600 ceramic
factories concentrated in the villages of Yeoju-eub
and Buknae-myeon (Ogeum-ri, Hyeonam-ri, Ohak-ri,
Cheonsong-ri and Jinae-ri).
Records show that ceramics were made in Yeoju from
the beginning of the Goryeo Dynasty and that the
ceramics industry began to grow from the beginning
of the Joseon Dynasty. This was all possible due
to the high quality (the best in the nation) clay,
white clay and Kaolin clay found in Sarisan between
Daeshin-myeon and Buknae-myeon.
Ceramics reports from 1932 housed in the Joseon
Colonial Government Offices show that the region
produced nearly 1.5 billion won (in today¡¯s currency)
worth of ceramics every year and formed the country¡¯s
largest ceramics village. This ceramics village
went on to make extensive contributions and supported
the ceramics industry, studied ceramics made by
potters of the past, developed new technology to
create new ceramic items and mass-produced a wide
variety of different types of ceramic items. Visitors
can not only observe the beauty of this craft in
Yeoju, but they can purchase Yeoju ceramics at reasonable
prices as well.
Every year, Yeoju holds the King Sejong Memorial
and the Yeoju Ceramics Expo, which has the slogan,
¡°The Harmony of Mud, Fire and Spirit.¡± Within the
ceramics village, there is a ceramics exhibition
hall plus 60 or so personal collections on display,
and visitors can also experience the making of ceramics
at any one of the ceramics factories in the village. |
