Angbuilgu is a kind of sundial and is constructed
in the shape of a hemisphere. 13 parallel lines
of latitude represent the 24 solar terms from the
winter solstice to the summer solstice, and time
lines are drawn vertically. A shadow rod is pinned
down at an angle toward Polaris and a mythic symbol
is drawn for each of the hours for those people
who could not read. The main construction material
is bronze and the letters and lines are engraved
with silver on a black lacquer background to ensure
that they can be clearly seen. Four legs stand on
a cross for balance.Considering the drawn lines,
Angbuilgu was presumably made after 1636. By looking
at its measurement of altitude of Hanyang (Old Seoul),
Angbuilgu is estimated to have been produced in
the early 18th century.
