This Pagoda is a marble pagoda standing right in
front of the House of Heaven Thesaurus. This pagoda
is a very important object for researching the arts
of the early Joseon period in terms of the material
it was made out of and the use of a detailed engraving
technique.Lotus flowers are engraved on the top
of the ground stone, and the middle-stone on the
ground stone is very thin. The piling stones are
very thick and also include lotus flower engravings.
On
the four corners of the stylobate¡¯s middle-stone,
flowers and detailed dragons are engraved.
The engraving technique is very skillful and
the surrounding clouds are quite beautiful.
The dragon¡¯s feet and face are so realistic
that it can hardly be seen as anything other
than a masterpiece.
The stylobate supporting the pagoda body also
has lotus flower engravings on its lower part
and an eight-storied roof stone on its top.
The topmost part of the roof stone seems to
be lost. There are not many engravings on
the roof stone. |
 |
| The
top part of this pagoda has been lost resulting
in uncertainty about the original shape of
this pagoda. It is assumed that there used
to be one or two more stories on this pagoda. We
can reasonably estimate that this pagoda was
established as when the Silleuksa Temple was
spotlighted as a temple for Yeongreung in
early Joseon. Therefore, as corroborates with
the old records, we presume this pagoda was
built in 1427 (3rd Year of King Seongjong). |
