The first stone relic you see after entering Godalsa
Temple is a Stone Buddha Pedestal. Only the pedestal
has been preserved but unfortunately, without the
stone Buddhist statue. Because of the Pedestal¡¯s
large size, the Buddhist statue must have been gigantic.
The fact that this pedestal is designated as Treasure
No.8 honors its great artistic skill. The Pedestal
is 1.57m high of a square shape and consists of
all upper-, middle- and lower-ground stones. Three
stones are piled to form a square pedestal, each
layer is made from a different stone and lotus flowers
are engraved on each of the stones. On the ground,
there is a ground stone with an angled stand; this
ground stone is fully supporting the pedestal. All
sides of the angled stand are carved; there are
lotus flowers on top of the stand and a 3-layer
base was laid to support the middle-stone. A square
middle-stone has engravings on all of its sides.
On the upper-stone, like the lower-stone, there
are engraved lotus flowers, and the stand for the
upper-stone is a 3-step stair consisting of two
squares on the bottom and top and a round one in
the middle. The square pedestal has lotus flowers
engraved on it and is evaluated as one of the greatest
pieces of art from the early Goryeo period. |
