This is a granite pagoda built in the 2nd Year of
King Gyeongjong (977) of Goryeo Danasty, 19 years
after Wonjongdaesa¡¯s entrance into nirvana. Shaped
in an octagon, popular from the late Silla to early
Goryeo period, and finely engraved, it shows the
characteristics of the time in which it was built.
For example, the structure is made of square low-stones
consisting of four pieces standing on wide ground
stones of also four pieces. This pagoda has a wider
bottom and its body shape is large. Designs engraved
on the round and well-shaped middle-stone are outstanding.
The big-eyed dragon looking to the west is very
dynamic. Around the dragon, four other dragons are
flying through clouds, both of which are delicate
and magnificent. Behind the middle-stone, a turtle
is showing its back, which is a not a common design.
The thick top-stone has lotus flowers, which seem
to be in order. The body stone of the pagoda is
carved in an octagonal shape, on which doors and
the Fours Devas are carved in turn. The octagonal
roof stone is also made of a single stone. A dragon
is wandering through a sea of clouds on the middle
stone and flying fairies are carved on the ceiling
of the roof stone, which implies that this place
is heaven. On horizontal eaves, Over ¡®jeonkak¡¯,
fernbrake shaped flowers are engraved, three of
which were destroyed. On the top, eight stripes
support the ¡®sangryun¡¯ and ¡®bogae¡¯ is on ¡®bokbal¡¯
on which octagonal ¡®noban¡¯ and ¡®hwamun¡¯ are decorated.
Both of the ¡®boryun¡¯ and ¡®boju¡¯ have been preserved
and are in good shape. |
