There is a legend that all of Godalsa¡¯s stone
arts were created by a stonecutter called
Godal. Godal was so focused on creating Buddhist
arts that he did not notice that his family
was starving to death. According to the legend,
Godal became a monk after finishing all the
works needed to become a great monk who realizes
Buddhist truth. The Godalsa Temple was named
after his name, Godal.
The
Stone Buddha Pedestal (Treasure No.8)
is the largest in Korea, the Gwibu and
Isoo of Wonjongdaesa Hyejin Pagoda (Treasure
No.6) contain much strength, and the
Wonjongdaesa Hyejin Pagoda (Treasure
No.7) is located at the Godalsa Temple
site. The Godalsa Temple Pagoda is assumed
to be the work of Wongamguksa and was
designated as National Treasure No.4
for its superior balanced and beautiful
shape. The scale of the stone remains
remind us of its glorious history.
